Oral and Written Traditions and Rock Art as the Histories of Both Ancient and Living Peoples, Especially of the Americas before the Arrival of Europeans

We will have many items here during 2003, some on Rock Art, some on links of the Southwest and Southeast of the USA with Mesoamerica. In addition to Oral Traditions, some of them recorded by amateurs or ethnograhers and some of them not, there are histories preserved in painted memory aids called Winter Counts, in the Scrolls of the Midewewin, and many others. Culture and archaeology are increasingly able to work together to trace migrations and yes even history of peoples.

Map: Native Languages and Language Families of North America This full color map was compiled by Ives Goddard of the Smithsonian Institution, and published by the University of Nebraska Press. It is an indispensible tool for thinking about the history and movements of peoples of North America, including the northern parts of Mexico. Ecological Linguistics offers the folding version 20 x 22 inches, which is very convenient for ordinary use, and can also be used on the wall at home or in a school. University of Nebraska Press also markets a very large wall version.

Chinese and Mesoamerican Calendars Several day names having nearly identical meaning occur in the same rank-order positions in Mesoamerican and Chinese calendars. This may be the first study which systematically evaluates the statistical probability of this occurring by chance, without making the well-known biasing error of first choosing the best match and after that asking what is the chance of such a good match occurring by accident. Additional patterning strengthens the case. The conclusion is that the matter does bear further investigation.
